Portland Water Fountains – Unique City Features
The Portland Water Fountains are the focal point of many of the cities parks and squares and give the place a real feel of class and distinction. This is almost a unique quality that sets Portland apart from many other cities in this region and in the US.
Water is part of the way of life for the people of Portland and with the city being surrounded by rivers it can be seen why they are so keen on water features. There are some really famous water fountains in the area such as the Lovejoy Fountain which was designed in 1968 for the Portland Development Commission. A unique sculpture that brings together some unique facets and this was designed around the waterfalls and the landscapes of the North West. The Lovejoy Fountain is not the only one in the city and there are many other unique designs to be admired as you explore the local area. Salmon Street Springs is one of the most impressive with jets of water coming up providing a wall of water and if you are unlucky enough you will most likely get very wet. The design is in the waterfront park which is located on the west bank in the City and this is one of the most popular parks in the area with a whole host of concerts, events and festivals. The Portland Water Fountains provide the perfect backdrop for these events and the features come into their own when they are lit up after dark.
Some people suggest a city square lacks something if there is not a water fountain as the focal point. This gives someone something to enjoy all year around, in the summer the cooling water can be a welcome rest bite for the tourist or city worker and by winter the fountain can become an ornate feature that can brighten up the darkest of skies. The Portland Water Fountains can be found in virtually every square, some are huge sculptures that raise a torrent of water high up into the sky and the sound of the water crashing down can over power every other sound and others are ornate features subtly positioned to provide a backdrop to the gardens or parklands. Many of the water fountains are carefully positioned in the Portland parks and they blend perfectly with the landscaped gardens to enhance the look of the area. Of course there are instances when the water fountains are almost works of art such as the Kelly Fountain with the water jets shooting straight up in the air against the backdrop of the

city. Portland Water Fountains are famous throughout America and many more cities are following suite and introducing water features to their parks and squares to improve the environment for the cities inhabitants.
