I couldn’t believe it – this was the final day of our first Montana ride. We’re headed home. The sun in the east was warm and inviting, but the morning air was brisk and a bit nippy. The eastern sky was beautifully blue, but as we directed our Road Star westward, the fabled, or in some cases, dreaded gray overcast of the Northwest loomed on the horizon. As beautiful as the weather had been, I couldn’t believe we were destined for rain, but the closer we got to Spokane on I-90, the cooler the temperatures got. We’d gassed up in Coeur d’Alene, so blew right through Spokane – just catching glimpses of the city’s skyline.

At Spokane, I-90 turns left to the southwest and to our relief, away from the gloomy gray. If fact, with every tick of the odometer, the heavens were returning to the royal blue, sun drenched skies we’d become accustomed to. While we loved the return of fairer weather, we soon became aware of boiling heat. Even with our flip-face helmets wide open, we felt wave after wave of hot scorching air reflecting from the pavement – occasionally bolstered by a torrid surge from our ‘air-cooled’ V-twin. However, this discomfort paled in comparison with the joyful satisfaction of riding, and smelling and feeling the rolling-hill resplendence of Central Washington. Mile after mile, we coursed through flowing golden-grained wheat fields, occasionally interrupted by an aluminum-bladed windmill or grain mill.

Roughly 1 hour southwest of Spokane, I-90 turns due west and Seattle. We stayed on WA-395 in a southwesterly direction for another hour and arrived at the Tri-Cities of Pasco, Richland and Kennewick. We found a truck stop just outside of Pasco a welcome break from the heat, and took the opportunity to refuel us and the bike. We found the highway through this area a bit confusing. WA-395 intersects I-182 so we traveled east for a few miles, then WA-395 turns south again, crosses the Columbia River and then drops into Kennewick. Just follow the signs for WA-395 and you should be good. We didn’t stop in Kennewick, but it’s a nice community and there are lots of shops, restaurants, or anything else you might need. From Kennewick, the junction with WA-14 is 22 miles. As I mentioned in Leg 1 of this trilogy plus one, WA-14 is by far the most interesting of the highways paralleling the Columbia, but if speed and saving time is your priority, you can save about 3/4 hour traveling toward Portland on I-84.

The trip to Washougal is simply the reverse of Leg 1′s itinerary, and brings us back to our humble abode. We hope you’ve enjoyed reading about our BEST first ride to Montana. Better yet, we hope you’ll take this ride and then let us know how you enjoyed it. We sure did. In fact, we’ve made the trip several times since. Stop by our website soon for another great ride.

Stucco is an ambiguous term, sometimes referring to portland-cement stucco, but more often than not referring to “Synthetic Stucco” or EIFS, which is what we will be dealing with. EIFS stands for “Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems” – the exterior insulating portion being the topic of this article.

Building a new home with, or renovating with stucco, reduces heating bills in 2 ways. The first is by reducing air infiltration into your walls, and the second is by reducing heating transferred through walls by adding insulation to their exterior.

Air infiltration occurs whenever there is a gap. This gap occurs on the siding as well as between studs. On most homes, the siding is not air tight, allowing air to pass through loosely connected vinyl, or on brick weeping vents. The second layer of defense is the weather barrier, which is typically a building wrap usually 8 foot in height, and overlapped at the seams. These seams are rarely sealed, resulting in a gap the entire length of the home where ever the building wrap is overlapped. Once air passes through the weather barrier, it encounters the sheathing next. This is usually some sort of composite wood (plywood, particle board) or exterior drywall, which is butted up against one another and again, rarely sealed. Finally, the invading air reaches the studs with loose-fill insulation, which still provides little to no resistance to air flow. Now take into consideration that a 1% air leak in your walls can reduce the effectiveness of insulation by as much as 60%, and you understand why air leakage is such a large problem.

EIFS solves this problem by using a trowel-applied, continuous weather barrier over the sheathing. The plywood or exterior drywall is entirely covered, including joints, completely sealing your walls from any possible air infiltration. The material used is one that adheres to the material around it as it cures, creating a single, monolithic barrier to the air.

This continuous barrier also serves as a surface to allow water and moisture to run off the wall, ensuring it never comes into contact with your sheathing and studs to form rot and mold.

Heat is constantly transferred through walls as well. Whether it is heat leaving your interior in the winter, or heating infiltration your interior during the summer. Materials such as insulation transfer heat less effectively than other materials, such as wood or metal, and as such as valued for their ability to separate your interior and the exterior climate. The problem with traditional between-the-stud insulation is that insulation is only effective where it is present.

That means that if your walls are composed of 80% insulation and 20% framing, you are really only get 80% of the possible insulating value. Again, EIFS blows traditional construction methods out of the water by covering 100% of the wall surface with insulation, by adhering it to the exterior of the building. This insulation is protected from the elements (and people) by mesh, a cement coating and the beautiful acrylic finish coat you see on stucco homes.

You can see that far from simply adding exterior wall insulation, EIFS plays a much larger role in making your home comfortable by reducing air infiltration. No other cladding product on the market today solves both problems so well, and at a price that anyone can afford to it.

Jim Schwarznoff has taken courses in green building and practical construction methods as a part of his Bachelor of Applied Technology in Construction Science and Management.
If you have an existing home that you would like to renovate with EIFS or have moldings added to, visit http://TorontoStuccoContractor.com/

With the warmer, Spring-like temperatures approaching, higher cooling costs are a fact of life. Today, heating and cooling costs account for more than 40% of your home’s energy bill, with much of your heating and cooling costs unfortunately escaping through your roof. To offset the increasing cost of energy, energy efficient roofing, such as solar panel roofing, live roof systems, or the so-called “ecoroof” are gaining popularity. Many local Portland roofing contractors are now specializing in these eco-friendly roofing systems.

To capitalize on this environmentally friendly movement, the city of Portland is offering incentives to promote eco-friendly roofing. Builders and Home Owners can receive cash incentives of up to $5 per square foot for the installation of an eco-friendly roof. With an average installation cost of up to $5-$20 per square foot for a new ecoroof, many homeowners are expected to take advantage of this opportunity and opt for a new, sustainable roof.

Once you make the decision to invest in eco-friendly roofing, what are the options? The use of solar paneling is known as black roofing. In contrast, a green roof uses vegetation, grasses, shrubs and trees as an alternative to conventional roofing. An excellent example is an ecoroof project completed by Gresham Roofing in Portland,Or. The Sacramento Roof Project is a luxury condominium project with six 300-square-foot eco-roofs designed to grow plants.

Regardless of which direction you go, an ecoroof will likely increase the life of your roof two or three fold, adding insulation and reducing storm water runoff. The long term benefits of sustainable roofing include reduced energy consumption, fewer pollutants, improvements in air quality and lower heating and cooling costs.

The recent economic incentives make the future look bright for eco-friendly roofing and the industries that support them in Portland.

Bend Oregon is one of the best places to retire in the United States. It has everything a retired person could want. The recreational opportunities are abundant; everything from mountain biking, hiking, rafting, golfing, fishing, rock climbing, camping, downhill and cross country skiing, snowmobiling, general sightseeing and much more.

The weather is perfect. Moderate days and cool nights characterize Bend’s year-round climate. Because of the high altitude and clear air, nighttime temperatures average 30° to 40° below the daytime highs. Evenings are generally cool, even in the summer, requiring sweaters or jackets. Annual temperature extremes show that only one year out of five has a temperature colder than -17° or warmer than 100°. Frost can occur during any summer month.

The average annual precipitation in Bend is less than 12 inches, over half falls between November and February, often as snow. Brief thunderstorms usually provide most of the light summer rain.

The average annual snowfall is 33.8 inches. Snow rarely accumulates to more than a few inches in depth nor lies on the ground for an extended period. Snow depth in Bend exceeds 24 inches in only one winter out of twenty. At Mt. Bachelor, the ski resort 22 miles southwest of Bend, snow normally reaches depths of 160 to 180 inches.

Bend was originally called Farewell Bend and received its name because it was at this place that travelers over the pioneer roads had their last view of the river. Today it is only a few hours drive to the Oregon Coast. Portland is 3 ½ hours away if you are looking for a big city. Redmond International Airport (Roberts Field) is only 16 miles North.

Bend is nearly the geographic center of the state and is also the most populated city in Central Oregon with a population of more then 75,000. To the east you will find high desert vegetation and to the west, Bend is surrounded by U.S. Forest Service land. At an elevation of 3,628 feet, Bend enjoys the predominately dry climate of the Great Basin. Sunny days, low humidity and cool nights provide the most common weather pattern.

Bend has the highest average number of sunny days in the state. Clear days average 158 days per year with an additional 105 days that are mostly sunny. Many of the remaining days provide substantial sunshine. Days that are totally cloudy do not often occur.

Bend is the outdoor recreation capitol of Oregon, with snow-capped peaks dominating the skyline. Bend is one of few places that visitors can literally ski in the morning and golf in the afternoon. Known as “the sunny side of Oregon,” the Cascade Mountains act as a protective buffer, giving Bend only 12 inches of precipitation per year. That compares to 42″ for Portland, 36″ for Seattle and 20″ for San Francisco.

St. Charles Medical Center is located in Bend and is the regional referral center for more than 230,000 people in a 32,000-square-mile area of central and eastern Oregon. With more than 240 physicians on its medical staff, representing 40 specialties and sub-specialties, and more than 1,950 caregivers, it provides many services usually found only in larger urban areas. These include open heart and neurosurgery, comprehensive cancer care, inpatient rehabilitation for stroke and major injury, sophisticated imaging technologies and more.

St. Charles is Oregons’ only level 2 trauma center east of the Cascade Mountains and has the region’s only Level 3 neonatal intensive care unit. The hospital increased its inpatient bed capacity to 216 in late 2004 to keep pace with Central Oregon’s population growth and is in the midst of expansions in facilities, technology and equipment.

St. Charles and the many other medical facilities in Bend provide state of the art health care for the retired person. Many of the nations top Physicians and Surgeons live in Bend because of the life style found in Central Oregon.

Bend also has golf courses for everyone. Central Oregon’s spectacular high-desert landscape and ideal climate, four-star resorts, public, semi-private and private courses have been rated 23rd in the world as a golf destination by Golf Digest. Choose from more than 25 unique courses, some easygoing to championship layouts like Sunriver’s Crosswater course, designed to challenge even the lowest handicappers.

Bend also has many volunteer opportunities. Habitat for Humanity, The Oregon High Desert Museum, Hospice, and Saint Charles Medical Center are only a few of the many opportunities to give back to the community.

Bend Oregon real estate prices are still moderate compared to some parts of the nation. The median home price is around $350,000. Real estate prices have been rising steadily over the past decade because Bend is such a wonderful place to live and retire.

If you are thinking of moving when you retire give Bend Oregon strong consideration. It is a great place to live.

Vancouver, British Columbia is an ideal location for the Olympic Winter Games. It is a major metropolitan area with significant infrastructure, close to world-class mountains and in a country that loves winter sports. The city’s international culture embodies strong elements from both the East and West.

Another feature of this location is its proximity to the United States. Situated approximately 40 miles from the US/Canada border, Vancouver will be easy to reach by land. You may wish to consider rail travel as a relaxing and affordable method to travel to the Games. Given the elevated demand for airline seats into Vancouver around the time of the Olympics, a land alternative may be the most enjoyable way to get to Vancouver.

Here are five tips/hints for effectively traveling to/from the Vancouver Winter Olympics by Amtrak:

One: You must first decide your gateway city. Seattle and Portland, Oregon are the logical choices. Although both cities enjoy great air service, you may wish to take the Empire Builder from Chicago or Minneapolis/St. Paul to either gateway city. You will experience the vast Northern plains and the scenic Rocky Mountains (including Glacier National Park) along the way. Alternatively, you can fly into California and take the Coast Starlight north from Los Angeles or Oakland. Like the Empire Builder, this train has Superliner sleeper accommodations. Finally, there is Amtrak Cascades service five times a day between Portland and Seattle.

Two: Once you reach Seattle, you have multiple means of transportation north to the Olympic Games. You can travel on one of two Amtrak Cascades trains that include a stop in Bellingham, Washington before arriving in Vancouver. Alternatively, you can connect to an Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach that only stops in Surrey and Richmond, British Columbia before its arrival in Vancouver. If you really want to explore numerous modes of transportation, you can take the Victoria Clipper high-speed catamaran from Seattle to Victoria, BC and the Pacific Coast Lines bus service from Victoria to Vancouver.

Three: The next decision is where to stay. Most people will elect to find lodging in Vancouver. The Pacific Central Station, Amtrak’s depot in Vancouver, is two blocks from the Main Street – Science World station on TransLink’s SkyTrain service. Four TransLink and two Coast Mountain bus lines run close to the train station. You will want your hotel to be close to a transit lines since there will not be any private automobile parking at the Olympic venues. The good news is that your Olympic event ticket gives you unlimited, free access to the TransLink system on the day of that event and the early morning of the next day.

Four: Two alternative bases for the Olympic Games are Bellingham, WA and the Whistler, British Columbia areas. Bellingham is about sixty miles from Vancouver. Both Amtrak Cascades and Greyhound bus service are available to Vancouver many times a day. If mountain sports are the focus of your visit, you may wish to stay in the Whistler area. There is Greyhound Canada Thruway service from Vancouver’s Pacific Central Station to the Pemberton/Whistler area.

Five: It will be extremely important to make advanced reservations for transportation and lodging to see the Olympic Winter Games. By buying your transportation tickets and reserving your lodging in advance, you may be able to receive discounted advanced purchase fares or fares for students and seniors. Finally, US citizens should remember that they will need to present their passports to cross back into the United States from Canada.

First looking at weather patterns, it appears that if there is nuclear fallout, where could you want to be? Remember weather patterns start in the West or North West and move across the country and change throughout the year, but always for the most part blow from East to West. So if you live East of the West Coast you could be in trouble if a Western city gets nuked. Then there are the East Winds in CA, which are called the Santa Ana Winds which are hot, fast moving and dry, the worst possible conditions for fires. As we see every few years in the Southern CA mountains.

So then perhaps you might wish to live on the West Coast, fairly good weather all year and the wind blows the other way. But you would want to live far from any major city on the West Coast. Not in LA, Not near the Nuclear Power plants, Not near the Military bases of Pt Mugu, Camp Pendleton or Vandenburg AFB. So where? Probably on the coast between Humbolt, CA and mid state OR. But alas there are huge faults along the West Coast and the OR Coastline is riddled with issues from liquefaction to offshore Tsunami generating Earthquake faults.

San Francisco gets huge Earthquakes as we know and LA is not immune either and neither is the central valley of CA with it’s issues after proof in the Coalinga Fault. Living between the Russian River and OR Coastline near the coast would be okay even with these issues. Also you would not be down wind from any fallout and you are not a target. Safe in that you have fish for food and lumber for heat and no need for much of anything like power, surrounded by capable woods people.

You would have lots of rain and no water that would be polluted running off from areas of fallout. Of course from an attack by sea from the Pacific side in the case of invasion, you would not be in the best spot, we are not expecting any wars, yet 20 years from now will China be our biggest trading partner or will 2 billion of them like this piece of real estate? If we were attacked for some reason you would have air support from all the Navy and Air guard Bases along the Pacific Coast. Where are other good spots? If Seattle was not hit by a weapon of mass destruction then you still have Earthquakes and remember MT. Saint Helen. There are some cities inland on the I-5 freeway surrounded by mountains, but they are close to volcanoes too?

Where else would be good? Well not Phoenix, not Las Vegas and Reno is over the hill from CA and gets all it’s left over weather. Boise has issues too. Although there are other cities in ID worthy of mention. Salt Lake is on a huge Earthquake fault. How about Helena MT, drought plagued and fire issues. Kellogg ID, superfund area. Billings out of water, Bozeman? Well too close to the State Park and there are issues with the volcanoes there too. Butte, MT also too close. Casper WY out of water and down wind in case of Volcanic Activity from Yellow Stone. Also think if Portland, SF or LA are not hit with nukes then we like, Four Corners, Elko NV, Battle MT (armpit) are doable with large underground water supply but it has arsenic in it. Winnamucka NV many not be safe either, but has thermal activity for power. ND and SD seem safe too, but winter weather is tough. Ogalla underground aquifer is being drained fast and could cause Earthquake from collapse. Western NE, not good, Denver either in case of water supply issues in future or fallout from volcano in Yellow Stone. How about in the Northern Section of AZ? Flagstaff has harsh weather, fire season. Winslow AZ is okay, with rail and FWY, but isolated. Of course these are only a few western states really and well we have identified several great locations with everything you need to survive.

Having studied the FEMA reports and the regional issues of each area and state and the disaster plans, we are well served by such data, but it falls short and a comprehensive plan of attack needs to be considered, because many people living in a region will need supplies, such as we see after major Hurricanes. Which by the way leaves us to wonder if there are in fact any safe cities on the entire Eastern Seaboard, Gulf Coast or West FL coastlines. As we saw in the black out of 2003, the Hurricanes and loss of power, the many fires in drought areas of CA, AZ, NV, MT, ID, OR, NM these are all big issues.

When multiple disasters hit, and transportation is down, power is out, water turned off, dams broken, bridges out, etc. Then what? Well, for some it will be their demise, others have adequately planned. Some of the safest cities are sitting near large underground water supplies and generate their own power or have co-generation plants, which are co-ops near by. Those mid western cities near large rivers are not safe due to the issues with flooding, as we have seen and continue to see every three to five years some town gets it. The water is fresh and clean in those areas and very soft, but when it floods, it is a disaster and very dangerous too.

Some would say it is probably unnecessary to have a major disaster plan, however it is a good exercise anyway, in planning. Things of importance are fresh water supply uncontaminated, food supply, encapsulated market, not over populated, no problems with contaminated air from normal weather patterns know and comparable to the last 200 years, out side of a fire zone and a defendable location. Also of secondary importance out side the risk of major seismic activity, travel from major highways causing and influx of others trying to get away thus bringing in diseases or viruses or using up local natural resources. Worst places to be D.C., state capital cities with lots of military bases close by, cities on major freeways with bridges and no other ways around for over 40 miles or passes on mountain ranges.

The cities which do not make the safest cities are Denver, Dallas, Mobile, Biloxi, Seattle, Chicago, NYC, Orlando, Tampa, Las Vegas, Salt Lake, LA, etc. Cities with no way to get out the population quickly are of problem, for instance DC with it’s daily grid lock or Los Angeles, Atlanta, SF, etc. Cities, which rely on outside sources to get in important stuff are bad. Not to mention you are more likely to die from an auto wreck, although on the plus side they have the cleanest and best filtrated water supplies. That of course a trade off from the polluted air around you which could also kill you before your average life expectancy figure.

Port cities and cities with big major airports, which are hubs for major airlines are bad too. Cities that are big but do not have fed banks are one click down on the list too. Think of the logistics by train too. Cities which are down river close to major railroad bridges, which handle lots of interstate trains are bad too. Port cities get an extra bad deal. Cities which are close to port cities which are over 2 million population are dangerous too. Large cities near borders of Mexico are dangerous if they have over 2 million populations.

San Diego County, San Antonio, Phoenix, Austin TX, Houston, even throw in Tucson, El Paso, Yuma all bad. Already at a fresh water problem time due to droughts and over populations. Santa Monica is bad and LAX is a bad area to be near. A problem at the sewer treatment plant near LAX could be devastating with chlorine gas and weather patterns, with a weapon of mass destruction. Worrisome also to our scenario of possibilities is the major computer brain areas. Like Silicon Valley, Seattle, VA and other Internet hubs, which would also include Boston.

I would like to see a comprehensive plan to save American lives if an attack or Mother Nature event occurs, one which encompasses the entire country. Perhaps this is a good job for our war planners at the Pentagon, to try a reverse order plan, it would help them learn where best to minimize vulnerabilities and an action plan against International Terrorists or Catastrophic Mother Nature Events.

I have been to every city in the United States over 10,000 population. Where have you lived? Have you lived thru a natural disaster? Many of us have. The Hurricanes alone last year alone added 40 more million people to that list, it was a costly year for FEMA, but we made it through and showed resilience. So where are you safe? The answer might be nowhere or everywhere and preparation and quality of first reponders may hold that key. What were your concerns, and immediate needs during that period in your life when you faced such uncertainty? What would you tell others who plan to protect the property and lives of America, too the first responders, planners and those entrusted to protect humanity in the times of need?

Portland is home to a number of distinct, eclectic neighborhoods. The Pearl offers ritzy, high-class boutiques and restaurants. Downtown is great for bar hopping. Northeast Alberta and Mississippi are home to a flourishing arts scene. The Hawthorne district overflows with funky shops and colorful characters. But if you are looking for safety, personality and community charm, look no further than Sellwood.

Nestled right next to the Willamette River in Southeast Portland, Sellwood is the place to be for quaint, locally-owned businesses, beautiful historic homes, and a strong, nostalgic sense of community. Sellwood and the adjoining Moreland neighborhoods are family-friendly and feature a number of different architectural styles, from Victorian homes to cozy cottages and bungalows. The streets are cool and the air fresh thanks to the many trees that dot the sidewalks. It isn’t uncommon to see families out for an evening stroll or a group of kids playing a pick-up game of basketball some Saturday morning. The area exudes friendliness and safety; it’s no wonder, then, that prospective home-owners are vying for spots in this beautiful piece of the Pacific Northwest.

The beauty and safety of its neighborhoods aren’t the only characteristics attracting home-buyers and new families to Sellwood. The vast array of locally-owned restaurants and retail shops are certainly sweetening the deal. The Ugly Mug Coffeehouse is Sellwood’s premiere alternative coffee source. Featuring fresh espresso and pastries, beer, wine, and a relaxed, welcoming environment, the Ugly Mug is the perfect spot to crack open a book or catch up with an old friend. The Grand Central Bakery is another great option for a fresh cup of coffee or delicious baked treats. They also do lunch, offering a variety of freshly prepared sandwiches on their own marvelous bread. Try Assagio if you’re looking for more of an elegant dinner option. Featuring gourmet Italian food and wine, Assagio is the perfect choice for an intimate evening for two. And who could resist Papa Hayden’s, specializing in over proportioned, gourmet luscious desserts.

Sellwood is also well-known for its seemingly endless supply of antique shops. Whether you are looking to furnish a whole room or simply find that perfect finishing detail, Sellwood’s antique options will not disappoint. If you can’t find what you’re looking for in the infamous Stars Antique Mall, the Den of Antiquity has been providing the Sellwood area with gorgeous furniture and collectibles for over thirty-five years. The Den features an ever-changing roster of knick-knacks just waiting to be rediscovered. Farmhouse Antiques is a collection of eight different dealers operating under one roof. From pottery to jewelry to old-time postcards, Farmhouse is a great example of what can be accomplished when like-minded business people work together towards a single end.

The antiquing adventure doesn’t end there, either. Kathryn’s Antiques features ornate and beautiful glassware – a lot of it. R. Spencer Antiques focuses on buying and selling locally, and the Raven is home to some of Portland’s most interesting – and dangerous – military antiques. Oh, and then there’s the Sellwood Antique Collective and the Sellwood Antique Mall. Over eighty dealers work out of these two locations, so there’s little chance you won’t find exactly what you need and, as is often the case, a few things you don’t.

After you’ve worn yourself out antiquing, make sure to take in the natural beauty of one of Sellwood’s many serene parks. The Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge is over 140 acres of beautiful wetlands dedicated to the preservation of some of the area’s most precious wildlife. Both the Sellwood Riverfront Park and the Sellwood Park offer fresh air and the chance for plenty of exercise. Sellwood Park features baseball, football, soccer and softball fields, basketball and tennis courts, picnic areas and plenty of native Oregon vegetation. Sellwood also offers the natural beauty and family fun of such destination spots as the Sellwood Community Garden, the Sellwood Pool, the Eastmoreland Golf Course and the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden. Sellwood is also home to the Westmoreland Casting Pond, historically used for the Rose Festival Milk Carton Boat Race event. It is frequently used by remote control boat hobbyists as well as for casting.

If you are looking for non-stop noise pollution, antisocial or downright rude neighbors, and the general hustle and bustle of big city living, then Sellwood may not be the best part of town for you. But if what you’re seeking are quiet streets, amicable residents, quaint local retail and fare, and an overall sense of nostalgic charm, look no further. You are already right at home.

There are several therapeutic hydrotherapic treatments and the two common among them are spinal bath and foot baths (cold foot bath and hot foot baths). In this article you will learn the methods and benefits of spinal bath and foot baths. Both these water baths have several health benefits and act as a natural healing process for many diseases.

Spinal Bath

Spinal bath is done in a special tub prepared for the very purpose. This bath is done in hot, cold or neutral temperatures. The patient is made to lie in tub which contains about two inches of water for about 10 to 15 minutes. This bath is used to soothe the spinal cord and indirectly influences the central nervous system.

Spinal bath is also beneficial in hypertension, irritation, excitement and in almost all disorders of the nervous system, including mental diseases as hysteria, epilepsy, insanity and insomnia. This must be done for about half an hour. When the nerves are depressed, the hot spinal bath is advised. It is useful in muscular back ache and pain due to vertebral disorders. It is beneficial in gastric disorders and sciatic pain where the patient gets pain along the sciatic nerve.

Cold Foot Bath

In cold foot bath, the patient’s feet are immersed in a tub or bucket containing water at 7º C to 12º C for about 5 minutes to 10 minutes. Friction is usually done during foot bath. Cold foot bath is not given in the conditions of inflammation of liver, kidneys and genitourinary organs.

Hot Foot Bath

In hot foot bath, the patient’s feet are immersed in a tub or bucket containing hot water for about 20 to 30 minutes. His body must be properly covered in order not to loose the heat. He needs shower bath after this treatment.

Hot foot bath makes the involuntary muscles of the body active especially uterus, bladder, intestines, abdominal and pelvic organs. It removes the sprains, contractions of the ankle joints, cerebral congestion and colds. It promotes menstruation.

Precautionary Measures

1. These hydrotherapic treatments must be done 3 hours before meals.

2. The thermometer must be used to record heat of water during the treatment.

3. Use clean and pure water for the treatment.

If you need to hire a contractor for roof installation or repair services in Portland, then you should know some of the differences between Portland’s commercial roofing contractors and those who focus on residential services. Distinguishing between the roof repair, installation and maintenance services that you might need will help you locate a roofing contractor in Portland who is right for your home or business.

Commercial Vs. Residential Roofing Materials and Roof Repair

While residential and commercial buildings can theoretically use many of the same roofing materials, many Portland OR will tell you that some types are better for commercial properties while others work best on homes.

For instance, very few homes in the Portland OR area employ flat roofing techniques. Flat roofing often requires complex plans that include holes for chimneys, solar panels, pipes, HVAC systems and any other systems that might need outlets on the roof.

While this is often a great option for commercial roofing in Portland, it’s simply unrealistic and too elaborate for most homes. Unless you have a very small business, you probably would not want to hire a roofing contractor in Portland to install shingles on commercial property.

Choosing a Commercial or Residential Roofing Contractor

The Internet makes it very easy to find a roofing contractor in Portland. However, you might not know if their specialities until you contact them for more information.

Some roof repair experts in Portland will tell you whether they prefer working on residential or commercial properties. You might want to get a list of references that will help you verify the level of experience.

Styles of Commercial and Residential Roofing in Portland

To a large extent, the types of materials that roofing contractors use depend on the function of the building. Flat roof systems work better on commercial properties, and shingles work better on residential buildings.

You should also consider choosing a Portland OR roofing company that understands the different styles. Flat roofs may not work well with residential buildings, but they also just don’t fit the style of other homes in the Portland OR area.

Look for a contractor who wants to help you find the shingles, metal or flat roof system that has an attractive look for your building and highlights functionality. Roofing contractors who have lots of installation and repair experience in the Portland area should know what types of styles commercial property managers and homeowners prefer on their buildings.

Mark Starr covers articles on roof repair in Portland for the website Roof Portland, an Oregon based company specializing in residential and commercial roofing and roof repairs.

The non-profit, which serves three counties, typically weatherizes about 20 homes a year, leaving up to 60 on a waiting list. Factoring in stimulus money, it may be able …

Why are so many NYC apartments listed as “heat included”? Is that for real?

Where I am from the buildings are heated by gas furnaces. Is it true what I've read about buildings in NYC being heated by a sophisticated system of steam pipes running through the city? If so, does that include Brooklyn? Who pays for this, the city?

Must see places in oregon?

Oh my!! Where do I start?
Oregon is a gorgeous state! What there is to do there depends very much on what kind of things you like to do, but pretty much Oregon has something to offer for everyone.

Cities:
Portland Metro Area … the excellent Oregon Zoo, Oregon Museum of Science and Technology (OMSI), a terrific downtown area, Rose Garden Event Center, and many other museums, art galleries, clubs, as well as the yearly Rose Festival and Parade.
http://www.travelportland.com/
http://www.oregonzoo.org/
http://www.omsi.edu/
http://www.rosefestival.org/

Salem … Oregon's capitol city.
http://www.oregonlink.com/

Eugene … one of the few 60's era counterculture cities still basking in it, with the Oregon Country Fair the big event in July. It's also a laid back and beautiful, very livable, city.
http://www.planeteugene.com/
http://www.eugene-or.gov/portal/server.p…

Further south … Medford, Grants Pass and Ashland (home of the Oregon Shakespearean Festival). All the major cities of Oregon are on the Interstate #5 corridor, I listed them north to south. One notable exception is Bend, which is becoming as much a major city for Oregon as the others, and it is nearly dead center of the state, on the east side of the Cascades.
http://www.ci.medford.or.us/
http://www.grantspassoregon.gov/index.as…
http://www.orshakes.org/
http://www.visitbend.com/

Other notable towns:
Astoria, on the far northwest edge of the state along the Columbia river. Pristine and scenic, a number of movies have been filmed there including Kindergarten Cop, The Goonies and Short Circuit. Fort Clatsop, very near Astoria, is where Lewis and Clark wintered during their expedition.
http://www.oldoregon.com/

Coos Bay, on the southern Oregon Coast, once the worlds larges lumber export port until the timber industry dried up. Now home to a casino and the primary town in southwest Oregon along the coast.
